7 Resolutions from the Early Church | Acts 2:42-47 Sermon

Sermon text: Acts 2:42-47

Sermon outline

Main idea: The early church was devoted to seven practices that can transform our church and through us our community.

  • Early churches were devoted to four community practices.
    • Apostolic Teaching
    • Fellowship
    • Communion
    • Prayers
  • These simple practices filled their members with awe for God.
  • Early Christians were committed to three daily habits.
    • Hospitality
    • Worship
    • Witness
  • These daily habits led to more being saved.
  • These practices and habits give us seven resolutions for our church family as a whole and as individuals for the coming year.

  • God promised a sign.
  • God calls us to reject fear of our circumstances and embrace faith in his promises.
  • God fulfilled his promise definitively in Christ.
  • In Christ, God is always with us.
Isaiah 7:10-17

  • We hope for a world learning from Christ.
  • We hope for a world judged by Christ.
  • We walk in Christ’s light now.
Isaiah 2:1-5

1 Timothy 1:12-20 Sermon

Sermon outline:

Main idea: We can fight false teaching in the church because Jesus gives us the strength to be faithful servants instead of unfaithful sinners.

  • Our strength for faithful service comes from Jesus (1:12-17).
  • If God can save the worst of sinners and use them for his glory, then we must address issues in our church knowing he can save anyone (vv.18-20).
1 Timothy 1:12-20

Philemon 1:17-25 Sermon

Main idea: When we believe the gospel of Jesus’s kingdom, it transforms our relationships and behaviors.

  • The gospel transforms relationships.
    1. It remakes our partnerships. (v. 17)
    2. It reorders our positions. (v. 18-20)
  • The gospel transforms behaviors.
    1. It renews our responses. (v. 21)
    2. It rearranges our plans. (v. 22)
  • Two examples: (vv. 23-24)
    1. A life transformed by the gospel.
    2. A life formed by the world.
  • Grace to live transformed by the gospel (v. 25)
